2023: Authentic assessment to develop integrated thinking

Session has concluded - see the recording

Presenter: Dr Kate Mai, La Trobe University, Australia

Summary:

This session will explore the outcomes of five years of using an authentic approach to assessment design. The assessment method mimics the interlinked workflow of professionals in the management accounting discipline. The approach develops integrated thinking where students personally experience how different tasks are connected in the practice. In addition to the theoretical underpinning of various functions of the discipline, students are able to gain a deeper understanding of the practical side of professional practice. The approach supports academic integrity with a similarity of 6% on average and has received strong student evaluations. This work was awarded the Vice-Chancellor's Teaching Award at La Trobe University in 2021.
